This project was lots of fun in kindergarten and brought together many of the social studies learning outcomes
in the unit "Me and My Family". We drew, coloured, collaged and added photos to our posters.
Students brought descriptions from home about the origin of their name and I added these as a tag to the
posters as well. Above each child's poster on display I tranformed a photo into a sketch
(which can be done at the website dumpr) and the students painted their sketch at the painting centre.
This was a great display for students to use to present their learning to their parents during student-led conferences.
I enlarged the 8x11 poster to make it huge, 2 11x17 sheets taped together.
Other teachers used the poster as an 11x17.
I printed the sketches onto card stock and taped off the edge with green painter's tape.
The children's photos were so cool - sorry that I can't display them here!
This portion of the project was a take-home piece.
Students came back with a written explanation and I added the tag.
La Petite Poule Rouge
This year our school became a Leader In Me school. This program is based on Stephen Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. I was looking for an activity to do with my students this month that would incorporate the respect and cooperation aspects of the Social Studies curriculum and the 7 Habits. I have decided to read the students La Petite Poule Rouge and discuss how we can be helpful and cooperative at school and at home. The next lesson will involve us re reading the book and re writing the story keeping the 7 Habits in mind. If all of the characters had been proactive, beagn with the end in mind, thought win-win and wanted to synergize, how would the story have read? Again, I will post my results after the activity!
