Students fill in the missing numbers and put the pages in sequence.  If you have your students colour all of the pumpkins orange, once they staple this book together, counting only orange pumpkins means they are counting by twos.

The mini books we use are finish-me books that leave room for student input.  They are also often based on a familiar poem or song so that students, especially in kindergarten, can begin to "read" their mini-books. The mini books often combine other curricular areas, math, science and social studies.

This was a fun lift the flap Halloween book.  The numbers were to be assembled out of order to encourage reading the number words rather than reciting numbers in order.

I have found this year in grade one that we make a lot of finish me books in the first 4 months of school, and then not so many beginning in January.  Because we follow the Daily Five literacy program the mini books are great to have available during Read to Self and Read to Someone times, especially early on in the year when there may not be very many books students feel they can read.

Here is an accordian book we made - it combines both themes for the month, shapes and Halloween.  You will notice some of our materials are similar between kindergarten and grade 1.  This is also helpful for differentiation, students can work on projects with similar outcomes but at different levels.
