Clear target:  I can use a simple map to locate specific areas within the school and community.

Clear target:  I understand that globes and maps are visual representations of the world.

As an introduction to maps we built cities out of blocks and math manipulatives in small groups.  The students loved their cities (some asked for a white sheet underneath to design roads).  We had to take photos.

The next day, with the photos of the students structures printed, students then drew a 2D map of their 3D structures.  They added legends legend.  We had already made a map of our classroom but the legend concept was tough for many.  Everyone was able to identify and label three structures from their map in their legend!
